Taking the scenic route to Masterton

Get yourself to Featherston, then head north towards Masterton and you’ll get the chance to turn left along Waiohine Gorge Rd.

If you’re worried about gravel roads then this one’s not for you! A 10km or so unpaved track will take you through the incredible gorge and to a handful of hiking tracks. Whether you take the steep path to the stone beach and waterfall, or to the 100m bridge suspended over a plunging ravine and rolling waters below, you’ll be sure to get some impressive snaps.

Drive back the way you came and carry on to Masterton, a local haven for artists and artisans alike. You’ll also find it easy to stop and berry pick at a local farm, or visit the Wool Shed, home of the annual Golden Shears Competition.
