Land Rover could have played it safe with the new Defender. Instead it kept the silhouette, the upright stance and the spare wheel on the tailgate, and rebuilt everything underneath. The result is a proper off-roader thats also very easy to live with every day, and this P400 SE shows it well.

The P400 is the one to have. Its a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with mild-hybrid assistance, making 294kW and 550Nm. Thats more than enough for a vehicle this size. Power is smooth and linear from low in the rev range, and it goes through an 8-speed automatic that shifts without any drama. Permanent 4WD sends it to the ground, so theres strong traction on gravel, in the wet and on the way to the ski field.

The 110 body is on an aluminium monocoque, which is far stiffer than the old ladder-chassis Defenders. It has independent suspension and Land Rovers Terrain Response system. In practice it rides well on the road, and when the road ends it will keep going over mud, sand, rocks and river crossings. Its an easy car to drive when things get rough.

The five-door 110 seats seven, so it works as a family car, a ski-trip car or a work-and-play car. The cabin is tough but modern, with a high driving position, big windows and plenty of space. The cargo area is easy to use when the rear seats are folded.
