Most McLarens ask you to put up with something. The GT doesn't. It has the carbon-fibre bones, mid-mounted twin-turbo V8 and rear-drive balance of a proper supercar. It's also built to be driven for hours, with a calmer ride and a quieter cabin than the others in the range.

Power comes from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 making 456kW, sent to the rear wheels through a 7-speed automatic. It's quick in a way that shows up in your chest rather than in a spec sheet, and it's controllable and predictable at every speed. Dial the car down and it's relaxed enough for the daily run to the city.

It's a rare car too, with only a handful of GTs in the country. It seats two, and the GT's luggage space is a big part of its appeal. That means weekend bags, golf clubs and the kind of trip most supercars can't manage.

Safety and convenience are covered by a rear vision camera, parking assistance, traffic sign recognition, LED headlamps with adaptive front lighting, and hill hold assist.
