This 2022 BMW M3 Competition xDrive is the sensible-looking sedan that keeps a secret. It seats five and has four doors, and the boot takes the groceries. Then you press the throttle.

Under the bonnet is BMW M's 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six, making 375kW and sent through an 8-speed automatic to all four wheels. xDrive is the difference here. The power is usable in the wet, on cold mornings and out of tight corners, so you don't have to wait for perfect conditions to enjoy it.

Inside it has the driver-focused M cockpit and a long list of assistance features. They include adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping support, traffic sign recognition, parking assistance, a rear camera and adaptive LED headlamps. It's a car you can commute in on Monday and take on a back road on Saturday.
