Finished in its original Signal Red (6407) over a black leather interior, this 1963 Porsche 356 SC Coupe stands as one of the most significant and comprehensively documented examples to remain in New Zealand.
Delivered new in November 1963, this is a New Zealandnew, factory right-hand-drive carone of just 20 examples supplied new to this market. Period registration records, chassis data, and contemporary photography confirm its early life and originality, placing it among the rarest 356 SCs delivered worldwide.
The cars provenance is exceptionally well established. It is featured in the limited-edition reference book The Twenty by Graham Lister, which documents historically significant Porsche road cars.
The 356 SC represented the ultimate evolution of Porsches four-cylinder pushrod engine. Power comes from the 1,582cc (1.6-litre) air-cooled flat-four, producing approximately 95 horsepower in factory specification. In SC form, this engine offered improved breathing, higher compression, and stronger top-end performance, making it the most powerful production 356 variant at the time.
Power is delivered through a four-speed manual gearbox, driving the rear wheels via Porsches proven rear-engine, rear-drive layout. The SC benefits from four-wheel disc brakes, a significant advancement over earlier drum-braked models, providing confidence-inspiring stopping power and marking the SC as the most technically advanced 356 produced.
What truly distinguishes this example is the depth and organisation of its documentation. The accompanying history file is exceptionally comprehensive, containing period photographs, restoration imagery, registration records, service history, and supporting material compiled in a clear and methodical manner. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most complete provenance files we have encountered for any classic Porsche.
