The Rhubarb is a Caterham-style lightweight built around one idea: take very little car and put a serious engine in it. Underneath is proven Mazda MX-5 NA/NB running gear, which keeps it simple, tough and easy to live with. The heart of it is a fully forged 1.8-litre turbo.
The engine is built properly. CP Carrillo pistons, a balanced crank, uprated valve springs and main and head studs give it the foundations to take boost. An HPE turbo feeds it, and a Haltech Elite 1000 ECU with wideband, boost control and sensors manages the lot. Power goes through a manual gearbox and a Blackline helical limited-slip differential, so the car puts its power down when you ask for it.
It's also been looked after. Recent work at Torque Performance covered a new helical LSD with Timken bearings, a replacement power-steering pump, a dedicated steering-fluid cooler, custom heat shielding, battery and terminal work, and a wheel alignment. Fredco records show a cambelt, tensioner/idler and water-pump replacement, a rocker-cover gasket and cooling-system checks. A fresh battery was fitted in September 2026.
